Rupert Wates was born in London and studied at Oxford University. He began his full-time songwriting career in the late 1990s after signing a publishing deal with Eaton Music Limited. In London, he collaborated with top-tier performers before moving to Paris in 2001, where he formed his own quartet and began performing regularly. Since relocating to the United States in 2006, Wates has made his home between New York City and Colorado and has earned more than 50 songwriting and performing awards.
His music is an eclectic blend of acoustic, melodic art/folk infused with elements of jazz, vaudeville, and cabaret. He has released twelve solo albums, each earning critical acclaim and international airplay. His songs have been covered by artists across the UK, Canada, and the U.S., with two full-length tribute albumCrazy Puzzle (2015) and Wide Open Heart (2017)—produced independently by other performers and composed entirely of Wates’ material.

The song is dedicated to all the children who have been the victims of bullying and abuse, and to everyone who ever wanted to sing with their own voice. Shoeless Sounds is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a dual mission rooted in creativity, community, and opportunity.

Every child deserves the chance to discover their voice. Every independent artist deserves a place to be heard. At Shoeless Sounds, we’re building both. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we champion singer‑songwriters through intimate house concerts, podcasts, and online showcases—and we invest in the next generation by bringing songwriting classes, contests, instruments, and real creative opportunities to local kids who would never have access otherwise.
If this mission speaks to you, your donation truly matters. Even a small gift helps a child write their first song, puts an instrument in their hands, or gives an emerging artist a stage they’ve never had. You’re not just supporting music—you’re shaping futures, strengthening community, and helping creativity take root where it’s needed most.
If you feel moved, please consider donating today. Your support makes the music possible.
